Living Thousands of Lives

Living Thousands of Lives

I am not an adventurer but I have traveled the world. I am not courageous but I have caught many criminals. I am not an astronaut but I have traveled the universe. I have just one life but I have lived thousands in the pages of books.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People
When Bad Things Happen to Good People - Harold S. Kushner
This book had some good ideas and definitely made me think but I did not like the author's assertion that God CAN'T heal the sick and can only give them strength to endure.

When the Heart Cries
When the Heart Cries - Cindy Woodsmall
Don't read this book unless you plan on reading all three. It reminded me of Les Miserables in that things went bad for everyone and the hits just kept coming. I really wanted to know if/how everything was going to work out in the end so I read most of the second book too which was better but still mostly depressing. I finally decided that no happy ending was going to make up for all this misery and I read books to be entertained not depressed. It wouldn't be so bad if each book could stand alone like most trilogies but this was like one huge book with only minor resolutions until the end (I assume since I didn't make it that far).

The writing was good, the characters well developed and yet I won't read any more of the author's books.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven
The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
A unique perception of heaven. I enjoyed the way that Eddie's life was explained through the people who he affected. The book reminded me of "It's a Wonderful Life" in that an average man discovers how important he truly was and how his life affected others.

The Last Lecture
The Last Lecture - Randy Pausch, Jeffrey Zaslow
An excellent reminder to live each day as if it were our last and what is most important in life.

Hazardous Duty
Hazardous Duty - Christy Barritt
I really enjoyed this book. Although there were times when the wrong word was used which was distracting (there are partitions in offices not petitions - this may have just been on the Kindle version). Also the actions and attitudes of the detective was irritating. I would not have dated him no matter how good looking he was. But the worst part of the book was our heroine doing things that would get herself hurt as well as hurting evidence in a trial. I can't stand stupid female leads.

I enjoyed the gentle way that God was discussed and even saw ways that I could bring Him up in casual conversation. I also found the discussion questions at the end to be very thought provoking.

The story itself was good and the plot was well thought out. Most of the characters were likable and quirky (my kind of people). I definitely thought the lead characters could be better developed and I look forward to that development in the next books.

The Enemy
The Enemy - Lee Child
I was set to not like this book because for the first time I knew who that bad guy was. But Lee Child did not disappoint with the twist at the end.

Takedown Twenty
Takedown Twenty - Janet Evanovich
Another exciting trip! If you are expecting this book to be different than the formula that the other books are based on then you will be disappointed. However if you just want a fun and zany romp with Stephanie then enjoy!

The Journey
The Journey - Wanda E. Brunstetter
This book did not contain the typical Amish story. The characters were filled with jealousy, pettiness and poor humor. Many times they weren't even civil let alone polite. The writing was juvenile and lacked the Amish tones I expected. I made it through 6 chapters before putting it down.

Echo Burning
Echo Burning - Lee Child
Another excellent book by Lee Child. There are always twists that I never see until they are explained. I never know who the bad guy is. But you can be certain that the bad guy will get exactly what they deserve.

Down the Darkest Road
Down the Darkest Road - Tami Hoag
This could have been a good book but the heroine was stupid and unlikable. The sex scenes were very graphic and often sick. The bad guy was scary and the hero was smart. I did not like that the daughter's destructive behaviors were never addressed. I won't be reading any more books by Tami Hoag.

Die Trying - Lee Child
Another great book by Lee Child. Up until the end I didn't know who the mole was. On the edge of your seat excitement. I will definitely be reading the next book.

The Husband List
The Husband List - Janet Evanovich, Dorien Kelly
I am not going to summarize the book since so many already have. I have loved nearly everything by Janet Evanovich but this one disappointed. I picked it up without knowing it was historical fiction but that isn't a problem. I have enjoyed many historical romances. What bothers me is the fact that I could not bask in the glow of a hard won union because the problem is solved on the second to the last page.

Wrap up with our couple lasted one page. I read romance for the romance, not for the resolution to whatever issue is keeping our couple apart.

I did like the strong heroine.

Celebrity in Death
Celebrity in Death - J.D. Robb
I own almost every In Death book and have read most of this series twice and enjoyed nearly every second of it. That being said, the mystery itself was fine but the quick dialog was very off. Eve and Roarke are no longer talking in sexy innuendo but in full out crudeness. The witty repertoire between Dallas and Peabody was forced and obvious. Eve can't even manage being put out by the new jacket and boots that Roarke purchased for her. She pushes for a search warrant that a rookie wouldn't have submitted. And worst of all Eve goes to Summerset for a quickly resolved problem and neither one of them takes a shot at the other. I would believe she would have gone to Caro much quicker. I am glad I didn't buy this one. I got it at my local library and still feel cheated.

Dark Lover
Dark Lover - J.R. Ward
It is nice to see a vampire book where the person who is changed is less than pleased with what they are going to become, at least at first. If you can get past the hokey names of the vampires this is a wonderful book. It does have very explicit love scenes. It puts a new twist on the life of a vampire since their bite does not change a human to a vampire.

Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great
Good to Great and the Social Sectors: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great - James C. Collins
I wish there was more in this book. It is an addition to Good to Great and I appreciate the author's comments about not just adding it to the book and making people buy the new one but I think this could have had more examples. I hope the author is planning something bigger in the future just for Social Sectors.
