The Gemini Effect
The Gemini Effect - Chuck Grossart
Wow. I didn't think I would ever give a book 5 stars that did not have a happy ending. I just don't tend to like those types of books but this one was so well written, so edge-of-your-seat riveting that anything else would have been wrong. I kept going there is only blank% of the book left how are they going to wrap it up in time? Is this going to be the first of a series? It is a very scary look at what humans can do to themselves very easily.

I will say there was a considerable lack of secret service which made parts of the book unbelievable but that was the only criticism that I had.

A Dirty Job
A Dirty Job - Christopher Moore
This book could have been so good but the liberal use of f-bombs and incessant cries for the main character to get laid made the book read like it was for a pre-pubescent male. I just couldn't finish it even though I wanted to know how the actual plot wrapped up. When the main character started to have sex in an alley with a dark creature that might kill him before, during or after the sex, I gave up.

New York Dead
New York Dead - Stuart Woods
I really wanted to love this book but the hero was being led around be his desire for a woman. He had no pride whatsoever. And the cops were far more concerned with closing cases even though they were putting innocent people in jail and the evidence pointed elsewhere. The story was almost great but missed by a mile.

Taking the Fall: A Cozy Mystery (Brenna Battle Book 1)
Taking the Fall: A Cozy Mystery (Brenna Battle Book 1) - Laney Monday
Brenna and Blythe Battle, judo experts, move to a cozy little town to open a dojo but a local reporter is killed on their first night in town and the murder weapon belongs to Blythe.

Taking the Fall was a cute story. It is not a great murder mystery and the heroine makes stupid decisions but it was a cute read. I will probably read more by this author.

Scorpion
Scorpion - Ken Douglas
Oh, this could have been a really good book. It had all the makings. It was fast-paced and exciting. It took place in exotic locations. There were twists and turns. And then... the book just stopped. It felt like the author got bored with it and while you could say there was an ending it reminded me of the story of The Lady or the Tiger. We do not find out if the bad guys get caught. There is absolutely no wrap up. If I had known then what I know now I would not have read the book even though I got it for free. The only reason it got 3 stars is because up to the ending it was a good book.

Simple Genius
Simple Genius - David Baldacci
Sorry Mr Baldacci. I read 2.8 of your books and I just couldn't stomach any more. I don't see what people see in you. The plots are good enough but you play fast and loose with your main characters and it got to the point that I just didn't care. I won't be picking up any more of your books.

Hour Game
Hour Game - David Baldacci
I picked up this series because of the King and Maxwell TV show which I really enjoyed, however I am finding what I liked about the show is lacking in the books.

First the good. Baldacci has me guessing and questioning throughout the entire novel. The twistedness of the villain is realistic and scary. The bad guys are smart and well thought out. It is easy to forget that you are reading a book. Until...

The bad. King's insistence on keeping the good theories to himself is driving me nuts! He has no problem speculating on motives or suspects but as soon as he hits on actual possibilities he shuts down and keeps it to himself.

More bad. The cops and FBI are all prideful idiots who couldn't catch a criminal if they witnessed the murders themselves.

The worse. When it comes to the action of the book Baldacci strains credulity. Even he says that something happened that was a one in a billion shot.

While I enjoy the John Puller series, I am giving this series one more shot before giving it up entirely.

Fahrenheit 451
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
I might have given the book 5 stars except that the beginning was SO WIERD. Very drug induced. Once you got past that it was very good. Definitely makes you think and that is the main purpose of books.

11/22/63
11/22/63 - Stephen King
I just couldn't give this book 5 stars. I enjoyed it immensely but I feel that the changed present was a big cop out. This is a time travel novel about a man who goes back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. In typical Stephen King fashion there are definitely times where you feel the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. The story was entertaining and obviously well researched. I just didn't think the ending was well thought out.

Wanted
Wanted - Nick Stephenson
It was a good, fast-paced story but the character development was nonexistent. I enjoyed it but it really was just a bit of fluff. I will read the second one but maybe stop there if we don't get more insight to the characters. Well written.

Sleep Tight
Sleep Tight - Jeffrey Jacobson
Really good story!

A foreign country sends bats infected with diseased bugs to Chicago and an infestation explodes because one of the bats gets away. This book is an end-of-the-world/zombie story but is very believable. I didn't care for any of the characters in the beginning. They were too flawed. There was no real hero to root for but by the end I was rooting for each and every one.

I think the wrap up could have been more thorough. I would have liked to have known why one character was immune; if the data that Dr. Menard sent made it to the press; and if the solution successfully contained the disease. All in all however I could definitely see this story become a movie. Very well written.

Eat, Pray, Love
Eat, Pray, Love - Elizabeth Gilbert
Not worth finishing. I have nothing to learn from this selfish, self-centered and often stupid author. She really needs to seek a therapist and get her head straightened out.

I couldn't get past the Eat portion of the book. I applaud Elizabeth Gilbert for being completely open with her life and relationship however I find her to be a dis-likable, selfish person. I am glad she decided not to have kids.

She is completely against taking antidepressants but if ever there was a person who needed them it is her. It sounds to me like she had a midlife crisis and decided to quit her marriage to quickly jump into another relationship. When she got too clingy, her new boyfriend became disgusted by her and would pull away. She broke up with him and then fell into another deep depression.

The book is about more than just her relationships but these are the reasons that I gave up on the book. I kept waiting for it to go someplace inspirational or at least interesting but after a while I just gave up in boredom.

Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose - Tony Hsieh
I wish I could give more stars. This book is a guide to life. It started slow but the entire second half of the book should be required reading for everyone. I borrowed the book from the library but am going to buy it now so I can read it and mark it up and lend it.

Mere Christianity
Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis
Outstanding book! Lewis is a great thinker who made me think about my religion. He uses metaphors that are easy to understand. I recommend this book to everyone whether Christian or not. It was never preachy just full of the basics of Christianity.

Okay, Suzanne Collins should have stopped with book 1. A wholly unsatisfying ending to a very good story.
